Window Replacement and Masonry Repairs – Norwich Road Academy
Location: Norwich Road Academy, Thetford
Client: Norwich Road Academy
Value: £98,000
Role: Designer, Principal Designer, Contract Administrator
The timber single glazed windows in the main Academy building had reached the end of their economic life. Rotten window sills, single pane glazing, and failing beading necessitated the replacement of the majority of windows. The Academy made the decision to replace all existing windows and enlisted Russen & Turner Architectural Design to oversee the design, statutory consultation process, and on-site works.
To minimise future maintenance, the Academy opted for UPVc windows as replacements. Although the Academy is not listed, it was important that the replacement windows matched the appearance of the existing ones. The final design included vertical beading within slim-line double glazed units, background ventilation, and safety glass for both panes.
As part of the project, the self-supporting brick cambered window arches required strengthening and securing into the surrounding masonry. A specialist contractor was hired to carry out these structural works based on recommendations from Structural Engineers. In addition to the structural enhancements, existing mortar joints were carefully removed and cleaned before being re-pointed with lime mortar. For larger windows, new windows were delivered to the site in sections for installation.
The replacement, installation, and restoration works were carried out over a six-week period taking advantage of the school summer holiday.
